I don't know the Canadian statistics, but according to everything I've read about school food in Canada, as well as the entire Canadian food system, you suffer from all the same issues that we do in the US. Thanks for taking up the cause in your district!!

I am an angry mom in Ontario Canada..and got involved with my childs school recently..i am their Healthy Snack Coordinator...i go in everyday and provide the healthy snack. I also got our parent council to fund 2% white milk for every child 2X a week. We are a small school and i fight some of the parents on a daily basis about some of my choices...no chocolate milk, no hotdogs, only whole wheat. the list goes on and on. Congrats on what you did..but was wondering if you know of any book of movie with the canadian statistics.

Thank you so much for all you've done, Amy. It's been 10 years since I realized my son had autism and put him on a healthy diet (organic, no wheat/dairy) ... I'm just reading your book and it all sound SO familiar.I'm so happy you haven't given up the fight even as your kids got past the "cupcake wars" stage. Among the passages I've underlined (to counteract "Food Police" label) : We are all just parents trying to take back the school food environment from the Junk Food Bullies"

Yale's Dr. Kelly Brownell: I don't see any rationale for offering unhealthy choices in school... you don't have unhealthy reading for the kids. You don't have an unhealthy playground that has toxic substances on it. Why do you want to have unhealthy food?

And former FDA head Dr. David Kessler: ...the food industry has done something similar (to tobacco industry) by manipulating ht esugar, fat, and salt content of food to hit our tastebuds at the "bliss point" that makes them irresistible...addictive substances. (but stacking the deck against them in the school cafeteria even while supposedly teaching them health)

Thanks so much for including the links to ADHD, autism, allergies, language processing difficulties, cancer and other health issues it goes so much further than just obesity epidemic.
Here's a link to an article I wrote on same http://celebratingspecialchildren.org/clientuploads/PDF%20-%20Archives%20-%20Healthy%20Kids/Special%20Diets,%20Special%20Kids.pdf

This sounds like a great book and thank you for what you have done. I have a new website:www.Mainlyintegrativenutrition and I'm sure that your book will help me educate parents in how to react to poor food choices in the schools.
Pam Popper has www.wellnessforum.com and she is also working to improve children's food choices in the schools.

Amy, I have yet to purchase the book. BIG CONGRATULATIONS on getting it published! It's still a "war that rages"...and my only hope is that we, as a culture, don't screw it up so badly that we can't get our kid's health back so they will live healthy adult lives, their whole lives.
