Growing Together Since 1982!

Amy Kalafa will be speaking on a panel about edible school gardens, along with other members of the Green Village Initiative

February 27 -29, 2012 Denver, Colorado

School Lunch Panel:  Speakers include Filmmaker and Author Amy Kalafa, Renegade Lunch Lady Chef Ann Cooper,  Stonyfield Yogurt CEO Gary Hirshberg and representatives from the food industry and school food service.

The attendees at this conference don’t need to be convinced to build or retrofit green and healthy school buildings, save energy or generate energy from renewable sources, integrate environmental curriculum, establish recycling programs, purchase green, bring healthy food into school lunchrooms or establish a green culture throughout the operations of their schools. They just want to know HOW!

In essence, we are preaching to the choir at this conference.  Instead of Talking To Attendees, We are Talking With Attendees to Remove Obstacles and identify Real Solutions They Can Take Back to Their Schools.

Friday, February 3, Monterey, CA – 3:30-5PM

Fixing School Food
School lunch is getting a makeover. Jamie Smith’s background as a talented chef and graduate of The French Culinary Institute in New York has created a huge impact on his role as the Senior Manager of Food Services & Nutrition for the Santa Cruz City Schools. He has incorporated seasonal and local produce in to the breakfasts and lunches of thousands of children and has forged partnerships with local farms to sell fruit and vegetables directly to schools. Amy Kalafa became involved with school lunches when she found out her daughter was eating fries, chips, and cake for lunch at middle school. She got angry, made a documentary film, wrote a book and created tools to help us create change in our own school districts.

Presenters: Amy Kalafa, Two Angry Moms, Georgetown, CT; Jamie Smith, Santa Cruz City Schools, Santa Cruz, CA
